Beginnings

St. Thomas More Parish began as a mission of Sarasota's Incarnation parish under the direction of Fr. Eugene D. Ryan in October 1979. From then until October 1984, the Cafeteria of Gulf Gate school was rented for weekend Liturgies and for various other parish gatherings and celebrations. St. Thomas More was officially designated a parish in January of 1981. The groundbreaking ceremony for the new church was held on June 26th 1983. Mr. Carl Abbott of Sarasota was selected as architect and Mr. Willi Malarcher of Englewood, New Jersey as liturgical consultant. Mr. Abbott was also the architect for the St. Thomas More Parish Center (Chelsea Center) begun in December 1996. The completed Church was dedicated on October 6, 1985 by Bishop John J. Nevins D.D. of the Diocese of Venice. |
