From the beginning, careful consideration was given to the design of the church especially due to the nature of the parish site - twenty acres of trees in the residential community of Gulf Gate. There was a consensus that the church, if at all possible should blend with the neighborhood rather than stand apart from it. The architect suggested that the church building appear as if it had been dropped into the trees thus creating the feeling that it had always been there. It is up to you as a new visitor or parishioner to determine our success at achieving this goal. |

First time visitors wonder aloud if "This is a Catholic church?" because it is different in style from what they are accustomed to. For one thing, there are no pews, no kneelers and people stand for the Eucharistic Prayer at the Sunday Liturgy.
The Second Vatican Council in it's reforms, restored the Liturgy as the primary work and action of God's holy people. The priest, as Presider, calls the people together and leads them in worship. In the liturgical experience all have a unique role to play, first the assembly itself, the priest, deacon and the other liturgical ministers. All work and pray together according to their various roles in one liturgical experience. The church and the various objects used in worship are so arranged to encourage such community participation. What initially appears to some as new or "modern", namely people facing each other around the altar and ambo (pulpit) is in fact ancient and is still found today in monasteries. The standing posture for Liturgy is also ancient and symbolizes being raised up in company with Christ. In fact Eucharistic Prayer 11 seems to assume that people are standing when after the Consecration it says: "We thank You for counting us worthy to stand in Your presence and serve You." "Kneeling" as a gesture of humility and unworthiness is quite valid but may be more appropriate for private prayer and devotion. Consequently, in the Chapel, where the Tabernacle is located, and which is a quieter, more private space, kneelers are provided.
