Why do we pray? Have you ever wondered why it is so important? The answer can be summed up in one word: relationships. Relationships are what makes our parish what it is today. Think about it. How difficult would it be to develop or even maintain relationships with other people, our peers, our kids, our friends, if we couldn’t talk to them or communicate in any way? "Therefore, from the day we heard this we do not cease praying…and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding…" Col 1:9 Well then, would it not be just as tough to develop and keep a relationship with Jesus Christ if you couldn’t talk to Him either? Yet, fortunately, that is not a problem. We have prayer. Jesus even taught us how to pray and many people feel that that is really the only way to pray. But, are we limited to only using the Lord’s Prayer? Certainly not. We can speak to God all through our daily life — in the car, on a boat, at the office — anytime — and in the same manner that we might speak to each other. Through prayer we can discuss those things that concern us, push us and challenge us most. Then, as those troublesome things seem to work out better, we discover that our spirit soars, that we trust God more and can depend on Him in ways we might not otherwise. After all, in the end, trusting God is essential when we are asked to make the kind of decisions that are the most difficult to make, including decisions about how we can keep the Spirit at St. Thomas More soaring for years to come. All we need to ask ourselves is, "Do I really trust God?" If the answer is, "Sure" or "Maybe" or even "NO!" then perhaps we need to make a little more room for prayer every day. After all, in the entire scheme of things Our Spirit Soars here at St. Thomas More because we first made room for a relationship with Christ. It’s time to let Our Spirit Soar! |
