The St. Thomas More Youth Ministry Team

Ryan Matthew Grogg

Position: Associate Youth Minister

Family:  wife-Jane, parents-Larry and Julia Grogg (still live in Decatur)

Born and Raised: Decatur, Indiana

Transplanted to paradise (Sarasota):  2001

Education:  Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Environmental Design from Ball State University College of Architecture and Planning

“Real job”:  Project Manager at Hoyt Architects in Downtown Sarasota, Florida.  I design and draw buildings of all types mostly in the Sarasota area.  I have worked on projects at Sarasota High School, completed condominium towers and worked on downtown commercial buildings.  I especially enjoy working and living in the same area.  Working on renovating my own home is a favorite hobby of mine.

Reason why I got involved in Youth Ministry:  I have always enjoyed spending time with the youth, because of their high energy level.  I like being active at youth group and in the projects that we complete together.  The youth group gives me the opportunity to get involved in my community and teach others how rewarding volunteer work can be for our lives and those that we are helping.

Favorite Bible passage:  Matthew 19:26
Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."

This passage is what we are trying to teach the youth through our programs, however, every time we complete large and seemingly impossible tasks with the youth, God ends up reminding us that this message applies to us too.  This passage is plucked from a story of Jesus telling the Disciples that getting to Heaven will not be easy and will require great sacrifice.  Getting to Heaven is possible through God when the Son of Man sits on His throne.

I also am partial to the book of Job.  It is a short read and shows that God will never put us through more than we can handle.  Job also shows that we should be able to handle many bad situations.

Jane Grogg

Family:  husband-Ryan, parents-Bill & Barbara Sondgerath

Born & Raised:  Lafayette, Indiana

Transplanted to paradise (Sarasota):  2001

Education:  Bachelor Urban Planning and Development from Ball State University College of Architecture and Planning

“Real job”:  Manager of Neighborhood Services, Sarasota County Government - I get to work with citizens in many different neighborhoods, connecting people to people and resources to neighborhoods. Whether it’s through a neighborhood grant, neighborhood plan, neighborhoods online or civics 101, I try to help citizens and neighborhoods discover what their gifts, talents and skills are to match them with what they care about most in their community.

Reason why I got involved in Youth Ministry:  I knew God was calling me to some sort of service and when Tim made the invitation to start the Youth Group up again, it was clear that this was my new assignment. I struggled with my faith as a teen. If God uses our struggles as lessons, I knew I needed to share mine to help others.

Favorite Bible passage:  “All things work together for good, for those who love God and are called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28) It got me through some rough times and believing it made it true in my own life.

“Real job”:  Co-owner of Children’s World Uniform Supply with Cynthia.  We specialize in school & work uniforms, custom embroidery, promotional products and unique games & toys.

Reason why I got involved in Youth Ministry:  To give kids a safe place to make new friends, have fun, and learn about God - things that I didn’t have when I was that age.

Favorite Bible passage:  “ Let no one have contempt for your youth, but set an example for those who believe, in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity.”  (1 Timothy 4:12).  Besides the obvious connection with Timothy, I love the passage because the youth of today do have a great opportunity to set the example for not only other youth, but for adults too.

College-Attended LSU & graduated SCTI Court Reporting

“Real job”:  Freelance court reporter

Reason why I got involved in Youth Ministry:  To find a place in our church community where I felt I could have an impact and make a difference.

Little did I know how much I would get out of sharing my faith with the kids of our church and watching their faith grow.  We have amazing teens.

Favorite Bible passage:  “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths” Proverbs 3:5-6.   This verse always gives me comfort when life gets crazy.  I just try to say it to myself and know that God has a plan and a purpose for our lives.
